Why being able to make decisions is important to mental wellbeing:

Indecision can have significant mental health side effects and can lead to various emotional and psychological challenges. Here are some common mental health side effects associated with decision-making difficulties:

  • Anxiety: Indecisiveness often triggers feelings of anxiety as individuals become overwhelmed by the fear of making the wrong choice. The uncertainty and anticipation of potential negative outcomes can lead to increased stress and anxious thoughts.
  • Stress: The inability to make decisions can lead to chronic stress as individuals may find themselves stuck in a state of limbo, unable to move forward with their lives or address important issues.
  • Depression: Prolonged indecisiveness can contribute to feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, which are common symptoms of depression. The lack of progress and the sense of being stuck can be emotionally draining and impact one's overall mood.
  • Reduced Self-Esteem:  Difficulty in decision-making can erode self-confidence, leading to self-doubt and negative self-perception. Individuals may start questioning their abilities and judgment, which can further hinder their decision-making process. The perception of being incapable or ineffective at making choices can negatively affect one's self-esteem.
  • Avoidance Behaviour: Some individuals may resort to avoiding decision-making altogether to sidestep the discomfort it brings. However, avoiding important decisions can lead to missed opportunities and further exacerbate mental health issues.
  • Rumination: Indecisiveness can trigger rumination, where individuals continuously replay potential outcomes and scenarios in their minds. This rumination can heighten stress and anxiety.
  • Impact on Relationships: Difficulty making decisions can strain relationships with others, especially if the individual's indecisiveness affects joint decisions or causes frustration and tension within interpersonal dynamics.
  • Decision Fatigue: Constantly grappling with decisions, even seemingly minor ones, can lead to decision fatigue, making it even harder to make choices as mental resources become depleted.

Strategies that incorporate gratitude into your decision-making process:

The path to wise decision-making is paved with self-compassion, gratitude, and a willingness to learn and grow. By incorporating these exercises into your life, you'll find the inspiration and motivation you need to make choices that align with your values and aspirations.

  • Reflect on past experiences: When you reflect on your past decisions, rather than dwelling on mistakes, express gratitude for the lessons learned and how those experiences have shaped you. Take a moment to think about past decisions you have made and the outcomes that followed. You may wish to write down the positive aspects of those outcomes and express gratitude for the lessons learned and the growth that occurred as a result. This reflection will help you approach future decisions with a sense of gratitude for the potential outcomes they may bring.
  • Shift your focus: Instead of fixating on the potential risks or negative aspects of a decision, consciously shift your focus to the positive elements. Consider the opportunities that may arise from each option and express gratitude for the possibilities they present. Ask yourself “what is the best thing that can happen if I make this decision” By focusing on the positives, you enable yourself to make decisions from a place of abundance rather than scarcity.
  • Practice gratitude journaling: Incorporate gratitude journaling into your decision-making process. Before making a decision, take a few minutes to write down three things you are grateful for. This practice will shift your mindset towards positivity and help you approach decision-making with a grateful perspective.
  • Seek different perspectives: When faced with a decision, seek input from others who may have a different viewpoint. Be open to their perspectives and express gratitude for their insights. This will broaden your understanding of the situation and enable you to make a more informed decision.
  • Gratitude Walk: Take a walk in nature and focus on all the things you're grateful for along the way—the beauty of the surroundings, the ability to move, the fresh air. Let the feeling of gratitude inspire you to make mindful decisions.
  • Gratitude Affirmations: Create positive affirmations that include gratitude and repeat them daily. For example, "I am grateful for the opportunities life presents, and I trust myself to make wise decisions."
  • Visual Reminder: Place a gratitude reminder, like a small gratitude jar or a sticky note, in a visible location. Whenever you see it, take a moment to reflect on what you're grateful for and how it can motivate you in your decision-making. Try placing a sticky note with your affirmation on your bathroom mirror as a reminder and look at yourself as you say this affirmation out loud.  This will create ease for any future decisions.
  • Trust your intuition: Trusting your intuition is an important aspect of decision-making. When faced with a difficult choice, take a moment to connect with your inner self and express gratitude for the wisdom and guidance it provides. Trusting your intuition, coupled with a grateful mindset, will empower you to make decisions that align with your values and aspirations.

Decide with Gratitude - Visualisation Exercise

Let's delve into a profound visualisation exercise that incorporates gratitude for motivation and inspiration, we will visualise the successful outcome of your decision while expressing gratitude for the resources, abilities, and support you have that can help you achieve your goals.

Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, allowing yourself to relax and let go of any tension. Imagine yourself in a peaceful and serene place in nature, such as a lush forest or a beautiful beach. Feel the ground beneath your feet and the gentle breeze on your skin.

Now, visualise a wise and compassionate version of yourself, a part of you that is connected to deep inner wisdom and clarity. This wise version of yourself represents the embodiment of your highest values, intuition, and gratitude.

As you connect with this wise self, express your gratitude for the lessons you've learned from past decisions, both the successes and the challenges. Embrace a sense of appreciation for the growth and wisdom that each experience has brought into your life. Let the gratitude flow through you, knowing that every decision you've made has contributed to your growth and resilience. Remember to send gratitude to others who were part of the journey.

Continue to breathe deeply as you imagine a specific decision you're currently facing. See yourself examining this decision from a place of wisdom and gratitude. Observe how your wise self considers the potential outcomes and the impact of each choice. Notice the positive possibilities that lie ahead, regardless of the path you choose.

Now, ask your wise self for guidance and listen closely to the inner wisdom that arises. What does this part of you have to say about the decision? What insights does it provide, and how does gratitude play a role in this process? You may want to write down your insights as you go.

As you receive guidance, express gratitude for the clarity and understanding you gain from your wise self. Thank this part of you for its ongoing support and assurance that you have the strength and resilience to make a wise decision.

Finally, visualise yourself moving forward with the decision you've made, carrying the sense of gratitude, motivation, and inspiration with you. Picture yourself embracing the journey ahead with a deep-rooted trust in your ability to handle whatever comes your way.

Take a few more deep breaths, feeling the positive emotions and the connection to your wise self. When you're ready, gently open your eyes, carrying this sense of gratitude and motivation with you throughout your day.

Remember that you can revisit this visualisation exercise whenever you need guidance and support in making wise decisions. Cultivating gratitude and connecting with your inner wisdom can be powerful tools in leading a fulfilling and purposeful life. Trust in yourself and the process, and allow gratitude to be a guiding light on your journey.

By incorporating gratitude into your decision-making process, you will find clarity and confidence in your choices. Embracing a grateful mindset allows you to focus on the positives, learn from past experiences, and trust your intuition. Remember, every decision is an opportunity for growth and gratitude.
