Cultivating Gratitude for Financial Abundance

Welcome to Lesson 8

Now we will learn how developing a positive and grateful attitude towards money fosters a healthier relationship with your finances and enhances your overall life and mental well-being. You are worthy to have a healthy and abundant relationship with money.

Money affects our lives, and it influences our relationships. This lesson is about understanding how having gratitude for money can make a real difference. When we appreciate the financial aspects of our lives, it can reduce stress, promote generosity, and create better connections with the people around us.

As a trauma informed mental health coach and clinical EFT practitioner, my goal is to provide evidence-based advice and encouragement to help clients improve their well-being in every area of their lives. Gratitude is a scientifically validated tool that can positively impact various aspects of life, including financial well-being and mental wellbeing.

By focusing on what you have rather than what you lack, you can shift your mindset towards a more positive and optimistic outlook. When it comes to money, being grateful for what we have rather than constantly focusing on what we lack releases stress and fear allowing creativity and clear thinking.

This lesson includes a unique EFT meditation -Create an Abundance Mindset

and a powerful mindfulness exercise - Welcoming Money with Gratitude

Let's cultivate gratitude together and unlock the transformative power it holds for our well-being!

The Ripple Effect of Positive Financial Mindset

Gratitude is often overlooked in the financial realm, even though it has the remarkable ability to shape our financial well-being. Let's face it, money can sometimes feel like a daunting subject. But what if I told you that by focusing on the positives – the moments when money brought you joy, ease, or relief – you could set off a beautiful ripple effect? When you express gratitude for the financial blessings you've experienced, you're inviting more of those positive experiences into your life. It's like sending out a signal to the universe that you're open to receiving abundance. This lesson isn't about ignoring financial challenges; it's about shifting your perspective to embrace the good alongside the difficult. As you embark on this journey of gratitude for money, you're creating a fertile ground for financial well-being to flourish.

Understand the Power of Gratitude for Your Financial Wellness:

  • Shifts Focus from Scarcity to Abundance: Expressing gratitude for the money you currently have shifts your mindset from scarcity to abundance. Instead of feeling like you never have enough, you acknowledge and appreciate what you do have, creating a more positive outlook on your financial situation.
  • Reduces Stress and Anxiety: Financial worries and stress can take a toll on mental health. By focusing on gratitude, you can alleviate some of that stress and anxiety by recognising the resources and opportunities that money has provided you.
  • Encourages Responsible Financial Habits: Grateful individuals are more likely to make responsible financial decisions. They tend to appreciate the value of money and are less inclined to overspend or make impulsive purchases.
  • Fosters Generosity: Gratitude for money can also lead to a desire to give back and help others. It can inspire a sense of generosity and a willingness to share one's wealth, which can further enhance feelings of happiness and fulfilment which is referred to in studies as Prosocial Spending.
  • Prosocial spending refers to spending money on others or charitable donations. Several studies have demonstrated that acts of kindness and giving can significantly enhance the giver's happiness and well-being. Being generous and open to receiving money with gratitude can create a positive cycle of abundance.

Exercises that help cultivate gratitude for money in one's life:

Take a few moments to acknowledge your financial blessings and open the door to a world of positive change.

  1. Gratitude Journal: Set aside a few minutes each day to write down three to five things related to money that you are grateful for. It could be something as simple as having enough money to buy groceries, pay bills, or having a roof over your head.
  2. Reflection Practice: Take some time to reflect on your financial journey. Consider the challenges you've overcome, the financial goals you've achieved, and the lessons you've learned along the way. Acknowledge your growth and progress with gratitude.
  3. Appreciation Ritual: Create a weekly or monthly ritual where you consciously appreciate the money you have. This could be a moment of reflection, meditation, or simply saying a few words of thanks to yourself or a higher power, acknowledging the financial blessings in your life.
  4. Give Back: As mentioned earlier, gratitude can inspire generosity. Find a cause or charity that aligns with your values and donate a portion of your money or time to support it. Being able to contribute to something you care about can enhance feelings of gratitude and happiness.
  5. Avoid Comparison: It's easy to fall into the trap of comparing your financial situation to others, leading to feelings of inadequacy. Instead, focus on your own progress and celebrate the positive aspects of your financial journey.
  6. Mindful Spending: Before making a purchase, pause and consider whether it aligns with your values and brings you genuine happiness. Mindful spending helps you appreciate the value of your money and ensures that you are using it in a way that brings you satisfact.
  7. Get grateful for the Simplicity:   Get grateful for the headaches we avoid by not having wealth. Everything you have needs to be cared for including money, realestate, cars, houses, holiday houses.  Many people with holiday homes spend more time cleaning and maintaining them when they are on holidays than enjoying a break!

These exercises aren’t just about money; they’re about empowering yourself to take control of your financial narrative and welcome more prosperity into your life.

Mindfulness Exercise - Welcoming Money with Gratitude

Imagine you're inviting a friend over to your home. You want them to feel welcome so they'll return and enjoy their time with you. The same principle applies to money. Money, in a way, is like a welcomed guest in your life. If you don't make it feel welcome and appreciated, it might not come back as readily.

Just as you'd prepare a comfortable space, offer refreshments, and share good conversation with your friend, you can apply a similar approach to money. When you hold money in your hands and appreciate it, it's like creating a welcoming space for it in your life. Money is more likely to "visit" again when it feels valued and well-received.

So, this exercise is like inviting money into your life, shaking its hand, and saying, "You are welcome here." By consciously welcoming money, you're creating an environment where it feels appreciated and, in turn, can contribute more positively to different aspects of your life. It's a practical and down-to-earth way to acknowledge the role of money in your daily experiences.

  1. Gather Loose Change or Currency: Collect some loose change or currency notes, such as coins, a few bills, or any form of money you have on hand. It doesn't matter how much it is. We will focus on the act of appreciation.
  2. Find a Quiet Comfortable Space: where you won't be disturbed. Sit in a relaxed posture, close your eyes, and take a few deep breaths to center yourself.
  3. Hold the Money: Take the loose change or notes in your hand. Feel the weight and texture of the money. Notice the different sizes, shapes, and designs of the coins or bills.
  4. Welcome Money into Your Hands: As you hold the money, imagine that you are welcoming money into your hands and into your life. Smile and be happy about this moment.
  5. Observe Sensations: Pay close attention to the sensations in your hand as you hold the money. Notice the coolness or warmth of the coins or paper. Feel the edges, ridges, and details on the currency.
  6. Express Gratitude: With your eyes closed, think about the money you're holding. Reflect on the role it plays in your life. Consider how it enables you to meet your needs, pursue your goals, and experience moments of joy and convenience.
  7. Savor the Moment: Take a moment to savor the joy that even this amount of money brings. Think about the things you can do with it, whether it's buying a cup of coffee, contributing to a cause, or saving for a future goal.
  8. Release Any Stress or Worries: If any financial stress or worries come to mind, acknowledge them. Then, consciously release them as you continue to focus on the money in your hand.
  9. Welcome Money into Every Area of Your Life: As you hold the money, imagine welcoming it into every area of your life. See it supporting your needs, desires, and dreams in various aspects, such as health, relationships, experiences, and well-being.
  10. Express Gratitude Aloud: Open your eyes, if they were closed, and say aloud, "I am grateful for this money. It represents abundance and opportunities in my life. I welcome money into every area of my life."
  11. Set an Intention: Consider setting an intention for how you'd like to use this money mindfully. Whether it's spending it on something that brings you joy or saving it for a future goal, visualise your intention.
  12. Place the Money Mindfully: After expressing your gratitude and setting your intention, put the money back where you found it or place it in a special location where you'll see it regularly. This serves as a reminder of the gratitude you've cultivated.
  13. Close the Exercise: Take a final deep breath, feeling the sense of appreciation and gratitude for the money you've held. When you're ready, open your eyes.

This mindfulness exercise encourages you to welcome money into your hands and into every aspect of your life. It's a way of acknowledging the role of money as a tool to support and enhance various areas of your well-being. It helps you to use money with intention, appreciation, and mindfulness.

How is this scientific? In the welcoming money mindfulness exercise, we're essentially tapping into the power of our beliefs and attitudes towards money, much like the placebo and nocebo effects in healthcare. Just as a placebo pill can make someone feel better due to their belief in its healing properties, when we hold money in our hands with gratitude and appreciation, we're setting a positive expectation for our financial well-being. This positive expectation, in turn, can influence our financial decisions and ultimately lead to a more positive financial reality.

On the flip side, if we approach money with negative beliefs, like a nocebo effect, it can create unnecessary financial stress and strain. Much like a person's health can be impacted negatively by their belief in the harmful properties of a harmless substance, our relationship with money can suffer when we expect the worst.

So, even in the case of this money mindfulness exercise, it's a powerful reminder that our beliefs and attitudes have a real and tangible influence on our financial experiences. By welcoming money into our lives with gratitude, we are, in essence, harnessing the placebo effect to improve our financial well-being, demonstrating that our mindset can shape our financial reality."

This exercise draws inspiration from Ken Honda's insightful teachings on the relationship between gratitude and money. Like Ken's wisdom, this exercise emphasises the idea of welcoming money into our lives, akin to inviting a guest into our home. It's a practical way to apply Ken Honda's concepts, acknowledging the importance of gratitude and mindfulness in our financial journey. We are thankful to Ken Honda for his impactful contributions to personal finance and well-being.
